Flutter + Firebase Starter

Start a cross-platform Flutter app with Firebase authentication, Firestore data access, push notifications, and deployable project structure.

Prerequisites

  • Flutter SDK installed locally.
  • Firebase CLI and FlutterFire CLI.
  • A Firebase project for development and, ideally, a separate project for production.

Install dependencies

Setup snippet
flutter pub get
npm install -g firebase-tools
dart pub global activate flutterfire_cli

Configure Firebase

  1. Create a Firebase project.
  2. Enable Authentication providers your app will support.
  3. Run flutterfire configure and select iOS, Android, and web targets as needed.
  4. Commit generated Firebase options only if they do not contain secrets.

Set Firestore rules

Checklist
  • Limit reads and writes to authenticated users where required.
  • Scope user-owned records by request.auth.uid.
  • Test rules with Firebase emulator before release.

Run and verify

  1. Start the Firebase emulator suite for local testing.
  2. Run the Flutter app on iOS, Android, or web.
  3. Create a test account and verify profile data is written to Firestore.
  4. Send a test push notification after device registration.
