Overview
URL Shortener turns long links into short, memorable ones on your own domain, then tracks how each link performs — total clicks, geography, and over time — with optional expiry and auto-generated QR codes.
It is built for marketers and businesses who want the tracking of a link service without handing their audience data to a third party or paying per-click fees.
The problem
Public shorteners brand the link as theirs, keep the click data, and can disable links or gate analytics behind a paywall. Running your own means branded links, full analytics, and links that never disappear.
Who it's for
- Marketers running campaigns who need per-link click analytics.
- Businesses that want short links on their own branded domain.
- Teams sharing links who want QR codes and expiry control.
Features
Custom short aliases
Create readable, branded short links with your own alias instead of a random string.
Click analytics
Track total and unique clicks per link, with trends over time.
Geo analytics
See where clicks come from, so you understand which regions a campaign reaches.
QR code generation
Every short link gets a downloadable QR code for print and offline use.
Link expiry
Set links to expire on a date so time-limited campaigns clean up after themselves.
User stories
- As a marketer, I want branded short links so that they look trustworthy in campaigns.
- As a marketer, I want click and geo analytics so that I can measure reach.
- As a user, I want a QR code for each link so that I can use it in print.
- As a user, I want links to expire so that old campaign links don't linger.
User flow
- 1
Create a link
The user pastes a long URL and sets a custom alias and optional expiry.
- 2
Share it
The short link and its QR code are shared across channels.
- 3
Track clicks
Clicks are recorded with location and time as people visit.
- 4
Review analytics
The dashboard shows performance per link over time.
Architecture
A Next.js application with Supabase. A redirect route resolves the alias to the destination and records the click with geo and timestamp before forwarding, keeping redirects fast.
Analytics are aggregated from raw click events, so per-link and geographic breakdowns come from the same source of truth.
Links live on your own domain and in your own database, so both the branding and the data stay with you.
